Education: Influence of Domain Size for a Fixed Volume Fraction in Topology Optimization
This section shows the effects of the domain size ratios on the optimal topology of a cantilever beam subject to a point load at the tip as shown for a fixed volume fraction. In other words, the ratio of solid material to the overall volume of the design domain is specified to 30% with a minimum length scale of 1.2 elements to avoid the appearance of the checkerboarding phenomenon in the results. Here we show how the problem is originally dominated by shear when the ratio is 1:1 and the results become more affected by the overturning moment as the length to height ratio increases.
