This workshop was funded by the Solid Mechanics and Materials Engineering (SMME) Division of NSF. Two NSF representitives participated in the workshop: Dr. Jorn Larsen-Basse (Mechanics and Material Program) and Dr. Vicki Booker (International Program).

The NSF's Americas Program (AMERICAS) aims to enhance the scientific, engineering and educational cooperation between U.S. institutions and researchers in Canada, Mexico and Central and South America.

The objective of the workshop is to motivate and strengthen international scientific cooperation between researchers from Brazil and United States, and to promote both short-term and long-term technical collaborations. This Workshop involves exchange of scientific information amongst the participants aiming to identify and prioritize research needs. This workshop was combined with the 2nd Symposium on Computational Modeling of Multi-scale Phenomena at the National Laboratory of Scientific Computing (LNCC).
