Mechanics of Biological and Bio-Replacement Materials |
Organizer: |
|
Dr. Kalpana Katti |
Description: |
|
Biological materials often have unique mechanical properties due
to their complex and hierarchichal structures. Modeling and characterizing
the mechanical behavior of such materials is a field at the forefront
of science and technology due to the importance of the biological
materials for materials design of the future. At the same time,
biological structural materials provide inspiration for design of
engineered materials for applications in medicine such as replacement
of soft and hard tissues. This symposium will bring together researchers
who deal with modeling and researchers dealing with characterizing
the mechanical behavior of bio-replacement materials (engineered
materials that replace biological tissues). Due to the complexity
of biosystems, novel modeling and characterization techniques are
used to understand the mechanics of such systems.
The focus of this symposium is to create a forum for synergy between
modelers and experimentalists who work on the mechanics of biological
materials. This symposium will bring together researchers from many
areas of mechanics and materials dealing with micromechanics, continuum
methods, numerical methods as well as experiments that investigate
mechanics of biological materials and engineered materials for replacing
biological materials.
Contributed papers are solicited in the following areas:
o Modeling and simulation of mechanical properties in biological
and bio-replacement material systems.
o Continuum, atomistic and Mesoscale modeling techniques
o Multiscale methods in bridging length scales for modeling mechanics
of biological and bio replacement materials
o Experimental techniques for mechanical characterization of biological
and bio-replacement materials. |
